"The Art of Children with Autism"

""

an artistic approach to creativity for children with autism

Mission Statement 2006

This art program is all about freedom. We at Colonial Intermediate Unit 20/ Autistic Support have 180 young artists in 26 classrooms. Two to three times a week, they are given an opportunity to express themselves in a relatively free creative environment.

Children with autism obviously need a structured environment in the classroom, but with our structuring, we seem to have removed most, if not all of personal freedom.

We have reserved time for ‘crafts’, but we even structure their craft ‘projects’ to meet ‘goals’. These ‘projects’ are most often pre-determined use of pre-determined forms and actions to arrive at a pre-determined solution to arrive at a pre-determined conclusion. Then we attempt to measure the results. All this has merit, but, by nature, the process does not allow much personal freedom.

This program attempts to create an environment that, with little or no boundaries, allows the child to react freely with the materials and tools provided. During this experience, we believe it is very important to offer very little guidance or direction, and defiantly NO instruction or judgment.

It is equally important to give MASSIVE amounts of encouragement! We attempt to share the joy of creating without over emphasizing the resulting artwork.

We feel that the act of creating instills some of the artist’s energy into the art created. When facilitating of these works of art, we try to stay as far away as we can from the student/artist's transfer of creative energy.

We respect these young people as true artists. We feel that this respect is one of the most important factors that have allowed this approach to be so effective.

For the second year, our artist will have their own exhibit at the Banana Factory Art Center in Bethlehem, PA. On March 5th at 2pm, there will be a gathering of students, their families, and our staff to honor our collective efforts and, of course, the works of art. The exhibition will open on March 15th with a more formal opening reception on the evening of April 7th. The exhibit will continue through the end of April into May.
